“Sport can be a powerful handmaiden for peace and reconciliation. It can bring us closer through shared celebration of achievements of universal appeal and attraction,” Then-President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, said adding that sport causes ethnic, religious and economic divisions to fall by the wayside along with prejudice, fear and misunderstanding. International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is designed to raise awareness of the importance of sport and physical activity for education, human development, health and peace.
Sport can be used as both a high-profile and participatory approach towards the reduction of violence and promotion of peace, but caution must be applied as regards the impact of these approaches in isolation. OFC is on a journey to understand the role that football can have in driving peace, reconciliation and social cohesion across the Pacific as part of our new Social Responsibility Strategy. The topic of peace feels more relevant than ever as we bear witness to the war taking place in Europe. OFC supports the stance by FIFA and UEFA to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
