The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP or Commission) is delighted to announce the appointment of Michelle Bachelet as its new Commissioner. Ms. Bachelet brings with her a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to human rights advocacy. During her tenure as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she consistently condemned executions and death sentences while commending countries that moved towards abolition.

Her contributions as the first Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women further exemplify her dedication to advancing gender equality and empowering women worldwide. As President of Chile, Ms. Bachelet spearheaded transformative initiatives that prioritized social protections, environmental conservation, and renewable energy development.

Moreover, her tenure as Minister of Defence and Minister of Health saw the implementation of pioneering policies aimed at enhancing the welfare of women in the military and police forces, as well as improving access to health services. “We are honoured to welcome Michelle Bachelet to ICDP”, said ICDP President Navi Pillay. “Her exceptional leadership, coupled with her dedication to human rights, will be instrumental in furthering our advocacy for the universal abolition of the death penalty.”

Background

The International Commission against the Death Penalty is composed of 23 Commissioners of high international standing from all parts of the world, under the leadership of President Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. ICDP’s work is supported by a group of 24 Member States from all regions of the world.

Its Secretariat is based in Madrid, Spain, and is responsible for the day-to-day work of the Commission. The Commission promotes the abolition of capital punishment in law in those States that observe a de facto moratorium on the use of the death penalty and advocates for a moratorium on executions in States that rarely use the death penalty.

ICDP works with the United Nations and other international and regional organizations, governments, and nongovernmental organizations to further the abolition of capital punishment worldwide.
