The recently released US Senate Intelligence Report on Torture should surprise no one. There is so much hate, discrimination, prejudice and murdering of so called "others", just because they don't believe what we believe. The US should take no pride in how we've spread torture techniques throughout the world. In a CNN piece on World reaction to the Report we find total hypocricy as no nation can take any sort of moral high ground when it comes to torturing others. In many countries throughout the world torture and humiliation is the modus operendi which is not exclusive to governments but is more about how human beings treat one another. We are all guilty because we allow our governments to treat others as less than human beings.
An op-ed piece by Musa al-Gharbi in Al Jazerra, Does the Senate Report on Torture Even Matter Without meaningful accountability and policy reform, the investigation has little value, provides a very accurate picture of how President Obama must approach the findings in this Report. Without proper reforms vis-a-vis the intelligence community, the Report serves as nothing more than a political propaganda piece. Yes we are worse suspicions have been confirmed, but will we do anything about them?
Torturing others to retrieve information or just for the sheer fun of seeing others suffer or wanting to frighten others to obey our rule is nothing new. This has been going on since the first human beings realized that they needed to kill to maintain their own superiority. When one hears former Vice President Cheney say, "I think what needed to be done was done. I think we were perfectly justified in doing it. And I'd do it again in a minute." one realizes how far the human race has fallen from being ever able to have any kind of lasting peace throughout the world.
In light of this Report President Obama and other world leaders have an opportunity to stop torture and make reforms throughout their countries. However, realistically torture, hate and stopping at nothing to achieve what any country wants the world to be, won't stop until the human race destroys itself.
