Nepali Sweetness

Amidst the pollution that constantly spews black from buses and the persistent dust that one can taste when riding in the back of a  tempo, lies in an incredible sweetness something like the juice from a fresh  mango or the  delight that one gets from eating a really good piece of chocolate or being in the arms of your best friend or lover.

In Kathmandu, where I’m presently living, I find this sweetness every day as soon as I step outside.  It comes from the smiles of the people whom I know, at least by site, and those whom I don’t know.  It comes from the strange looks that I get, especially from children, but after saying “Namaste” and “hello” the change that comes over most of their faces.

I’ll always treasure this sweetness for as long as I live, that basic knowing deep inside of the loveliness of the Nepali people.
