Recent crises triggered by climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have had devastating consequences for people around the world, with poor and vulnerable populations particularly affected. Governments everywhere have turned to social protection programmes to cushion the social and economic effects of these shocks and to ensure people’s livelihoods. In a world confronting multiple global crises, investments in adaptive social protection systems are urgently needed.

Adaptive social protection (ASP) relies strongly on cross-sectoral collaboration and a robust digital backbone. Where such ASP systems are in place, needed support can be provided quickly and in a targeted manner. Despite growing recognition of the need for ASP, implementation still poses major challenges.

The Global Forum on Adaptive Social Protection will strengthen international commitment for supporting ASP. It will take stock of ASP implementation to date and derive lessons for the future.

The event will take place in Berlin from 13 to 15 June 2023. It will be presented in English, but some of its sessions will feature simultaneous interpretation into French and Spanish. The main sessions will also be livestreamed.

The Global Forum is hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the World Bank (WB) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in cooperation with partners and with support from socialprotection.org.
