This workshop series provides guidance and resources on four key areas of collective impact work.

About this event

Are you early in designing and implementing your collective impact work and looking for guidance and resources?

This fall, the Collective Impact Forum is launching “Essentials for Collective Impact,” an online four-workshop series. Attendees can choose to join the full series of four workshops or register for single workshops within the series.

This series focuses on supporting those early in their collective impact work by providing workshops focused on four key areas, one key area per workshop, that are critical when implementing the collective impact approach for social change.

Each workshop consists of a 3.5 hour virtual session plus a 1 hour virtual Faculty Office Hour.

Essentials of Collective Impact at a Glance

The series runs from September through October, and you can choose to register for all four workshops, or the single topics that most interest you.

  1. An Introduction to Collective Impact and the Backbone Role (Sept. 13, Sept. 16)
  2. Advancing Equity in Collective Impact (Sept. 29-30)
  3. Community Engagement in Collective Impact (Oct. 13-14)
  4. Data and Learning in Collective Impact (Oct. 24, Oct. 28)

Workshop Descriptions

1. Introduction to Collective Impact and the Backbone Role

Workshop Date: Tuesday, September 13. 1pm – 4:30pm ET

Faculty Office Hour: Friday, September 16. 1pm – 2pm ET

Join us for an introductory workshop on collective impact. This training will provide an overview of the basic elements of the collective impact approach. We will include discussion and examples of a common agenda, shared measurement, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication, and a deep dive on the skills and characteristics of backbone role. We will also discuss some of the key lessons learned about collective implementation and creating a culture for collective impact. This session includes both a half-day workshop on September 13 and a one-hour office hour with workshop faculty to answer further questions on September 16. This workshop is designed for participants who are new to the collective impact concept and early in their initiative’s development.

Lead Faculty: Jennifer Splansky Juster, Executive Director, Collective Impact Forum; Paul Schmitz, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum

2. Advancing Equity in Collective Impact

Workshop Date: Thursday, September 29. 1pm – 4:30pm ET

Faculty Office Hour: Friday, September 30. 1pm – 2pm ET

Advancing equity is core to achieving collective impact, but how does leadership prepare to address equity and structure an initiative to ensure equity is at the center? In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the concept of social equity, tools for organizing collaborative thinking and work on equity, and strategies and activities for embedding equity into collective impact initiatives. This workshop will also go over key building blocks for equity-focused work as well as explore resources and practices to support equity work, including organizational equity assessments, equity impact analysis, and targeted universalism. This session includes both a half-day workshop on September 29 and a one-hour office hour with workshop faculty to answer further questions on September 30.

Lead Faculty: Junious Williams, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum

3. Community Engagement in Collective Impact

Workshop Date: Thursday, October 13. 1pm – 4:30pm ET

Faculty Office Hour: Friday, October 14. 1pm – 2pm ET

What does it mean to do “community engagement” and what are the variety of avenues to communicate, collaborate, and co-lead with your community? This workshop will focus on foundational concepts and practices around community engagement. This workshop will also review a series of tools for planning community engagement to be more purposeful, equitable, transparent, and strategic so that community residents and grassroots leaders are true partners for achieving impact. This session includes both a half-day workshop on October 13 and a one-hour office hour with workshop faculty to answer further questions on October 14.

Lead Faculty: Dominique Samari, Principle, P3 Development Group; Paul Schmitz, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum

4. Data and Learning in Collective Impact

Workshop Date: Monday, October 24. 1pm – 4:30pm ET

Faculty Office Hour: Friday, October 28. 1pm – 2pm ET

Are you looking for a primer on where to get started on how to use data in your collaborative work? Much of the attention on data in collective impact initiatives focuses on the sometimes ominous “shared measurement system.” While shared measurement is an important component of the data activities of collective impact efforts, it is but one aspect of the data landscape and may divert attention from equally important data-related activities-learning, continuous improvement and accountability. This workshop will discuss data needs, activities, and strategies across different phases of a collective impact initiative, and how these data activities can support evaluation, learning, decision-making and continuous improvement. This session includes both a half-day workshop on October 24 and a one-hour office hour with workshop faculty to answer further questions on October 28.

Lead Faculty: Junious Williams, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum

Who Is Essentials for Collective Impact designed for? The Essentials for Collective Impact series is designed specifically for those in the beginning/early stages of their collective impact work. If you are preparing to launch a collaborative or are in the first few years of your initiative, this series of workshops is specifically designed for you. It also can serve as a refresher on core concepts of the collective impact approach.

The series is structured by topic, so you can choose the full series or the specific topic that you are most interested in.

If I attended the Champions for Change workshop in prior years, should I join the Essentials series? The Essentials series has similar content to past Champions for Change workshops. If you have attended past Champions for Change workshops, we would recommend Essentials if you are looking for a refresher of that content, or as a new learning opportunity for your teammates or partners. If you are not looking for a refresher, but for a completely new learning experience, we recommend our annual Action Summit instead. The 2023 Action Summit will be held April 24-April 27, 2023.

Can my whole team sign-up with one registration? No. Each person will require their own registration as this is an active workshop where attendees will be broken up into small groups throughout the workshop time to discuss learning questions during the session.

Are there Group Rates available? Yes. If you have 10 or more people interested in registering for the complete Essentials series of all four workshops ($595), there is a 10% discount available. Please contact Christopher Pulido at christopher@detailsbycp.com to access this discount. Single workshops in the Essentials series do not have a group discount.
