Using my skills to make life better

Someone has said that people are destined to do something in this world. And for this purpose, they are roaming here and there to find their destination. I cannot say that I have found my destiny but I feel some kind of satisfaction by doing a particular job. You guys might be thinking what kind of job is this? The job is to coach Person with Disability by teaching them about basketball. As this sport is not only for able bodied persons; everybody can play and can enjoy it. It is a medium of coming together and improves our morale and ethics by sitting within its rules and regulations.

I personally believe that, it is very hard to play the game when someone has a disability and when the game comes to the ball one has to move very quickly to chase the ball. Even in the case of basketball games, players have to try very hard to master the skills of it. These skills include dribbling, shooting, passing, moving, chasing and many more. In my team, there are eight enthusiastic players who badly want to learn and play. Even though they have a physical disability and haven’t developed the skills yet they are trying very hard. Being their coach, my responsibility is to satisfy their anxiety.

Every Saturday afternoon I go to St. Xavier’s School in Jawalakhel for coaching.  There are three coaches including me assigned by Engage Corps. We start our training by stretching and warming up. These skills help them to develop their muscles which is needed while playing the game. We make them run, huff, tired and shout in the entire training. Even I feel worried and afraid that they might fall, I don’t dare to show them this because if I show them what I feel then they might lose their courage and desire to play. The players are stronger than I thought because they have already accepted the fact that they physical disability, whatever comes in their way, they have to survive and live. Sometimes I think that it is very unfair, about the fact that why god has created discrimination between human lives. One is living with a feast and buffet daily while another is seeking for one hand meal.

Our players come every Saturday to St. Xavier’s ground from Narayanthan, Kalanki and Balkhu which takes approximately one hour by vehicle. But they do travel that very long distance in their own wheelchair which has become their habit. I personally believe that they are the people who can teach about survival and life. When we talk about their past life I feel very inspired by the way they are living. Even though they have lost many things in their life, they welcome every new single thing. They haven’t played basketball in their whole life, but they do welcome this game to learn, play and share together.
