Almost 690 million people around the world went hungry in 2019. As progress in fighting hunger stalls, the COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying the vulnerabilities and inadequacies of global food systems. While it is too early to assess the full impact of the lockdowns and other containment measures, at least another 83 million people, and possibly as many as 132 million, may go hungry in 2020.

There is a real danger that the crisis will increase poverty and widen inequalities, with the impact felt for years to come. Countries now need to do everything they can to stop this jobs crisis from turning into a social crisis. Reconstructing a better and more resilient labour market is essential".

Record temperature trajectory threatens to breach 1.5°C global heating threshold (from UNEP)

New climate data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicts that the annual mean global temperature is likely to be at least 1.0°C above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900) in each of the coming five years (2020-2024) and there is a 20 per cent chance that it will exceed 1.5°C in at least one year.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will host the Global Technical Meeting on Reimagining Volunteering for the 2030 Agenda. The online special event will take place from 13 to 16 July 2020 during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Almost a third of lemurs and North Atlantic Right Whale now Critically Endangered - IUCN Red List

Almost a third (31%) of all lemur species in Madagascar are now Critically Endangered – just one step away from extinction – with 98% of them threatened, according to today’s update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. This update completes a revision of all African primate assessments, concluding that over half of all primate species in the rest Africa are under threath.
