The other day I spent quite a few hours in the queue waiting for my wife’s scooter to be refilled. It was an interesting experience as I had the opportunity to meet some friends and hear them talking about politics. Obviously many were blaming India for what is going on. Someone was wondering how miserable life has become in Kathmandu. I could not stop but saying that well “if life is miserable in Kathmandu, just imagine how it is in Tarai or Western Nepal”.
The real truth is that still large parts of the population that are suffering and pay the consequences. The real truth is that many persons in Tarai feel excluded and not enfranchised enough to consider themselves equal citizens like the rest. The real truth is that many disadvantaged groups feel not full members of the nation. The real truth is that the caste system and misconceptions about others are well rooted in the society and it will take generations to eradicate them for good.
The real truth is that Nepal is bound together thanks to a common language though for many citizens not a mother tongue one but at least spoken and understood by almost everybody. That was what made Nepal as a nation.
The real truth is that people from different ethnic or religious groups, despite the challenges, decide to stick together and be part of this nation. The real truth is that Nepali people from all background are very resilient and have patience and know how to look towards the big goals. The real truth is despite the injustices and many equal spaces still experienced within the society, people, at least most of them, are wise and think long term and are ready to forget about the past and move ahead.
The real truth is that common sense can always prevail if there is good will and genuine intentions. The real truth is that a new class of young politicians will soon take over the country. The real truth is that many youths now oversees studying will come back with new enterprising ideas. The real truth is even the laborers now in the Gulf and in Malaysia will be a force for good to be counted on and they will be transformative too. This is already something happening and you notice. The real truth is that a stable and more equal Nepal can achieve amazing goals.
The real truth is that the common good is there and despite the messy politics and many dishonest people around , is alive and kicking thanks to millions of small but spread gestures of love and kindness practiced all over the country. The real truth is that a simple smile can make a difference.
The real truth is that we are in all this together and we should find a way out together. The real truth is that still the vast majority of the people deeply care about a common future together in a better, more prosperous and fair Nepal.
