The 2024 HLPF will have an in-depth review of SDG 1 on No Poverty, SDG 2 on Zero Hunger, SDG 13 on Climate Action, SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals. The forum will consider effective and inclusive recovery measures to address the impacts of COVID-19 and multiple recent crises across all Sustainable Development Goals and the integrated, indivisible, and interlinked nature of the Goals.
In preparation for the reviews of these in-focus SDGs at HLPF, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), in collaboration with relevant UN system partners, is organizing a series of Expert Group Meetings (EGMs), bringing together experts and stakeholders from the UN system, governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society, to review progress on commitments made at the SDG Summit and since these SDGs were last reviewed at the HLPF. Four Expert Group Meetings will be convened in Spring 2024, on SDG1, SDG2, SDG13, SDG16, with SDG17 considered in a cross-cutting manner. The EGMs will be opportunities to identify particular areas of concern, challenges and opportunities for accelerating transformations; to consider interlinkages with other SDGs and opportunities to leverage synergies and minimize trade-offs; to share knowledge about success stories, good practices and lessons learned; and to suggest ways forward in terms of policies, partnerships and coordinated actions at all levels. The reviews will be an opportunity to take stock of recent commitments, such as on SDG 2 during the Food Systems Summit and the Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment and on SDG 13 during the Climate and SDGs Synergies Conference, the Climate Summit and COP28. They can also speak to the challenges under consideration at the Summit of the Future in 2024 and the UN 2.0 vision of a modern and agile UN.
In addition, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations , the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the International Development Law Organization will organize the “SDG 16 High-Level Conference 2024 – Peace, justice and inclusive societies for Sustainable Development”, to be held on Monday, 6 May 2024 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Conference will bring together representatives of governments, international organizations, civil society, academia and youth. Building on the outcomes of previous editions, the Conference will foster the sharing of experiences and insights and help to identify good practices that can support the acceleration of progress towards SDG 16 in support of the transition to a more sustainable future, and further promote its key role as enabler of all the other Sustainable Development Goals.
The meetings will inform the 2024 HLPF and the planning of its sessions, while contributing to the evidence base for collaborations and programmes of work on the SDGs going forward from 2024.
