Last Sunday I had the chance to visit the Labim Mall in Patan, the recently open shopping mall in Pulchock. While there are still some constructions going on and some areas like the top floor terrace is still closed to the public and many shops still to be opened, the place is very nice with a lot of lights coming inside so that you do not really feel trapped inside a dark closed door box. Despite great esthetics and good architecture what really impressed me is the fact that the mall is totally disable friendly. There are ramps to get into, though the main entrance from Pulchock was still under construction and only partially open for persons living with disabilities. Even the male toilet as long as I can understand are disable friendly or at least are a good attempt to meet the the special needs of persons living with disabilities in mind.
I am not an expert on disable friendly physical accessibility but it seems to me that Labim Mall is a pretty good place for persons with physical disabilities to hang out . Maybe there are other parts or areas that are not accessible but at least it is a beginning. With the right inputs and feedback, the management of Labim Mall will surely improve the infrastructure, making it really totally disable friendly, the first 100% disable friendly mall in the country.
Nearby Labim Mall, on the way to Jhamsikhel, there is another commercial space coming up, not a mall, nothing comparable with big commercial malls, a space that will probably host some shops and offices. Also here I noticed a ramp in the entrance and the skeleton of an elevator.
These are good news for making the country more disable friendly and totally accessible. There is still a long way but it is a beginning
