On Thursday afternoon, the election authorities announced that John Pombe Magufuli, a relatively unknown politician till recently, is the new President for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party CCM that has ruled Tanzania since independence. He takes over from Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete who will step down next month.

On Thursday the EU Leaders had a summit in Brussels to discuss about the immigration crisis. Some important decisions were taken, including concrete measures to strengthen the EU borders security and a package agreement with Turkey, an indispensable player to solve the crisis. As part of the bargain, Turkish citizens will probably have a much stronger chance to get visa access to EU.

The international Day of Girl is an important celebration but one commemoration day is not enough. We need to link these kind of events with long term advocacy initiatives at national and local level. Think of a national GIRL Coalition that brings together multiple actors like NGOs, INGOs and Donors. Think of mainstreaming girl related issues at local level in the existing forums.
