This report covers the judicial use of the death penalty for the period January to December 2022. Amnesty International reports only on executions, death sentences and other aspects of the use of the death penalty, such as commutations and exonerations, where there is reasonable confirmation. In many countries governments do not publish information on their use of the death penalty.

To walk us through what this shift looks like, we’ll speak with Ashoka Fellow Joaquim de Melo, founder of Banco Palmas, Brazil’s first community bank that opened its doors 25 years ago.

The third Afghanistan Legal Research Network symposium of 2023, hosted by the Max Planck Foundation, discussed the challenges faced by people with disabilities currently in Afghanistan and highlighted the intersectional challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities and by those in rural areas. Recommendations to advocate for these rights to be upheld were considered.
