Day one of the Pacific Small Island Developing States Regional Workshop began …, with the aim of helping Pacific states to prepare for deep sea mining activity.

PRNGO Chair and Pacific Network on Globalisation Coordinator, Joey Tau, says that the forum presents mining as the only way forward, sidelines Pacific community voices, and ignores the science and threats of deep sea mining.

"The Pacific has very little to gain from this," he said. "It's driven by corporations and we need to have these conversations. We cannot keep pinning it on the region as this blue continent at the same time saying it is sustainable."
