There is something about stepping into September that feels like an invitation to pause, reflect, and change. As the sun dips lower in the sky and the evenings become chilly and dark, our senses tell us that the energy of summer has come to an end in the northern half of the world.

The Autumn Equinox is a meaningful time of year to honour the harvest — Whether that be a "real" harvest of the things planted in your garden or the harvest of efforts and intentions set earlier in the year.

A note from the Tamarack Team:

This summer, Tamarack launched our first survey of our entire network since the beginning of Covid-19. Hundreds of you shared your reflections, hopes, and ideas. Thank you! We look forward to sharing a summary of what you told us and an overview of how it shapes our work. Watch for that in Engage! and on our website this fall.

Update from Paul Born Co-Founder of Tamarack Institute

"I want to start with a huge thank you to the Tamarack Community for all the wonderful comments and well-wishes as I retired from the Co-CEO role at Tamarack. We are a remarkable community and it has been a privilege to give leadership to co-founding and growing the community with all of you."

Hear from Paul Born as he reflects on his time with Tamarack, his new relationship with the organization, and what's next for him and his work.

Participatory Grantmaking: Lesson from the Region of Peel

What would happen if residents in a community were able to decide what organizations and services were funded in their area? The participatory grantmaking pilot, a partnership between the WES Mariam Assefa Fund and the Tamarack Institute, explores how this concept can empower and change communities.

This case study presents key lessons learned from the Tamarack team’s perspective during the first half of this two-year project.

For those interested, we have also published a new tool on monitoring collaboration. This has been designed to help you assess the quality of collaboration that occurs amongst a group.

New Series: Climate and the Sustainable Development Goals

There are countless intersections between climate change and a range of other issues such as poverty, hunger, equality, employment, and sustainable land and water. The Sustainable Development Goals provide a useful framework for unpacking these linkages.

Through 10 articles authored by diverse community changemakers from across Canada, this series explores the interconnections between the Sustainable Development Goals and a range of complex issues. Covering a wide range of topics including refugee education, healing justice, energy efficiency, and the circular economy, this series draws on a wide range of knowledge and lived experience.

New Addition to the Collaborative Leadership & Governance Series

Last month we launched the 2022 Collaborative Leadership & Governance series. This collection of over 20 articles and papers will help inform the process and people aspects of effective collaboration and provide you with a wide range of practical ideas and resources for pushing your work forward. We've launched the second resource in this series, Collaboration: Beginnings and Endings, which explores those two critical phases of the collaboration process.
