Chaired by Heidi Hautala, Vice-President of the European Parliament, the first hearing of the IPI will host witnesses and experts exposing their views on the situation in Myanmar, and will be broadcast live. A Presspoint for members of the media by Charles Santiago, IPI Committee Member and Malaysian MP, will follow the hearing.
“The response to the devastating crisis unfolding in Myanmar is going nowhere fast,” said Hautala. “As parliamentarians, we know that governments and international institutions can, and must, do more to end the current impasse. These hearings aim to shed light on where the response is falling short, and to provide information on the next steps that can be taken to put effective pressure on the Myanmar junta.”
Members of the IPI Committee participating to the first hearing today include:
- Mercy Barends (Indonesia)
- Taufik Basari (Indonesia)
- Amadou Camara (Gambia)

BACKGROUND ON THE IPI
- What is the International Parliamentary Inquiry?
- Why the Inquiry?
Despite pledges to oppose the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Myanmar and hold the country’s notoriously abusive military to account, international actors–including the UN Security Council, ASEAN, the European Union, and countries who have professed concern over the situation–have failed to take sufficient steps to compel the junta to negotiate a political solution to a spiraling conflict that is rapidly turning Myanmar into a failed state, with catastrophic humanitarian, social, and economic consequences.
- How will the IPI conduct the inquiry?
In response, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) has established on 15 June 2022 the International Parliamentary Inquiry into the Global Response to the Crisis in Myanmar (IPI). The IPI will hold five international parliamentary hearings conducted weekly from 22 June to 20 July and is calling for written submissions. The Committee’s conclusions and recommendations for action are to be released in September 2022.
