Our degrees are delivered in partnership with the University of Sussex who support and accredit our teaching and learning programmes.

Together we have now been ranked best in the world for development studies every year for the past six years. This year’s number one spot puts us ahead of SOAS and Oxford.

Ranking reflects quality partnership

The ranking reflects the quality, impact and range of international development research expertise and courses offered across the Sussex campus – at IDS, and at the University of Sussex’s School of Global Studies, Science Policy Research Unit, and Centre for International Education.

Professor Melissa Leach, Director, Institute of Development Studies, said:

“During another year of the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple global challenges, I’m immensely proud of the expertise and dedication shown by our staff, students and partners.  To be ranked number one in the world for the sixth year running is testament to them and to our longstanding partnership with the University of Sussex.

“At the Institute of Development Studies will continue to adapt and innovate to build future leadership for development and remain at the forefront of research, learning and teaching for development studies globally.”

Professor Elizabeth Harrison, Head of the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex, said:

“For Development Studies at Sussex to be recognised as number one in the world for six consecutive years is a fantastic achievement. It reflects our great teaching and research relationships, both across campus and between Sussex and its partners globally.

In the School of Global Studies this year we have continued to adapt and respond to, not only the continuing pandemic, but also the wider challenges confronting all who seek a fairer, safer, more sustainable and inclusive world.”

Making a difference to global transformations

IDS offers 11 postgraduate courses: nine master’s degrees, three of which are offered jointly with the University of Sussex, and two PhD programmes in Development Studies.

Students and researchers at IDS come from all over the globe and are united in their commitment to help solve real-world problems such as disease, inequalities, climate change and conflict.

Our degrees are taught by some of the world’s leading development experts. Many of whom are active in the field as researchers and practitioners and apply this valuable experience of engaged research to the classroom.

IDS graduates have gone on to senior roles in global organisations such as the World Bank and the United Nations, and in leading civil society organisations. Some have gone on to serve as senior diplomats and Ministers in national governments across the world, and even President and Vice-President roles.
