The Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will take place on 20-21 July at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan, in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual participation. Climate and SDG synergies and co-benefits can only be sufficiently realized if policy makers from all sectors accord these issues high political priority. A better understanding of these co-benefits in national, regional and global contexts can spur more deliberate action and collaboration towards realizing them.

The overall focus of the conference will be on the progress made over the last few years on synergistic action in raising climate ambition towards the 1.5 degrees goal of the Paris Agreement while putting the world on the right track for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The Conference will zoom in on sharing of experiences, challenges and opportunities as well as ways to overcome constraints in the joint implementation of these two critical agendas.

Extended deadline for LOCAL in-person participants (application open only for those participants who do NOT need visa to enter Japan) - new deadline 15 July 2022. Register for in-person participation here.
Register for virtual participation here by 18 July.

The conference will be hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan in partnership with the United Nations University and the Institute for Global Environment Strategies. The event will take place in a hybrid format: online and in-person at the United Nations University Headquarters in Tokyo.

Co-benefits and synergies between the climate and sustainable development agendas can only be sufficiently realised if policymakers from all sectors give these issues high political priority. A better understanding of these co-benefits in national, regional, and global contexts can spur more deliberate action and collaboration towards realising them.

The conference will explore recent progress on synergistic action to raise climate ambition towards the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement, while putting the world on the right track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The event will provide a forum to share experiences, challenges, and opportunities and discuss ways to overcome constraints in the joint implementation of these two critical agendas.

The event builds on two previous synergy conferences. The first Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda took place in April 2019 in Copenhagen. The second conference was organised as a virtual Global Synergies Consultation during May–June 2020, and comprised three online events.
