Participants from the public sector, private sector and non-governmental organizations explored their respective approaches to cyber risk reduction. Discussions focused on definitions, regulations, implementation measures and recommendations for mitigating cyber risk. In particular, the workshop aimed to enhance engagement and identify confidence-building measures among cyber actors. The sessions were moderated by three SIPRI experts: Dr Lora SaalmanFei Su, and Larisa Saveleva Dovgal.

This workshop was informed by a recent SIPRI report on ‘Cyber Risk Reduction in China, Russia, the United States and the European Union’ and a SIPRI co-hosted Open-Ended Working Group side event at the German Mission in New York. These undertakings lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive final report to be published in December 2024.

About SIPRI’s work on cybersecurity

Networked information and communications technologies have become an essential part of everyday life. The societal benefits of these technologies are beyond dispute. It is also evident, however, that these technologies generate new kinds of risks for international, national and human security. SIPRI seeks to contribute to a better understanding of what these security risks are perceived to be and how states, private companies and international organizations may respond.
