The search for a global moral compass has been a fraught one. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights calls on all nations to see past ethnicity, creed, gender, nationality, race, sexual orientation and other perceived differences – but these peremptory norms are not always praxis.
But as the world faces increasing challenges to democracy, equality and rule of law it has become clear that human rights are under siege. How do we use the tools of diplomacy and foreign policy to uphold the human rights agenda against the backdrop of unfolding crises in Afghanistan, China and Myanmar? What role does foreign assistance play and where must lines be drawn to avoid accusations of imperialism or interference? How do we address positions of cultural relativism that endanger marginalised groups?
